Denise Lee, Consultant

I enjoy helping people find effective ways to express their ideas and promote their services. I have been developing my creative skills for many years, first as a writer, then as an editor and publication designer, and finally as a webmaster.

I have done freelance work for community groups, nonprofits, schools, universities, researchers, and small businesses.

Before moving to Santa Cruz in 2001, I was an editor at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore, MD, in the field of international health. Editing projects included manuscripts, newsletters, conference proceedings, presentations, fact sheets, brochures, and other academic and marketing materials. I was webmaster for three sites, including the Johns Hopkins Center for Human Nutrition. While working full time, I earned a Master of Liberal Arts degree from the Johns Hopkins University. I was with the university for thirteen years, then left to return to school full time. I earned a Master of Library Science degree from the University of Maryland College Park in 2002.

After moving to Santa Cruz, I joined ETR Associates in Scotts Valley, CA.  I was project coordinator of an online best practices website for one year, and then I was program manager of a national education clearinghouse for four years. Writing projects included progress reports, funding proposals, web content, and electronic newsletters. Both of these Federally-funded projects used their websites as their primary service delivery method.

I grew up near Annapolis, MD, on the Chesapeake Bay, where I loved to sail. My undergraduate degree is from the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

I live with my husband, Scot Close, a Web site editor and developer. We enjoy hiking, reading on the beach, and cooking together in our spare time.
